The Amalfi was a Pisa Class armored cruiser of the Italian Navy built in 1908.
On July 7th, 1915, the ship was returning to Venice after a bombardment of the Austrian coastal defences near Trieste, under escort of two light cruisers and several destroyers. At dawn, when about 15 miles from Venice, the ship was attacked by a submarine, the UB-15. Only one torpedo was fired and this struck the Amalfi a mortal blow, and in a very short time she sank with about 150 of her complement of 550. The remaining 400 were taken off by the escorting vessels.
